FORTIFIED Roof Installation in Huntsville, AL
Built to IBHS FORTIFIED standards — qualifies for Alabama insurance discounts of 20-35% off your wind premium.
What FORTIFIED Is and Why It Matters in Alabama
FORTIFIED is a building standard from IBHS — the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety. The standard adds construction details that significantly reduce the chance your roof comes off in a hurricane-strength wind event. Alabama law requires homeowners-insurance carriers to offer premium discounts on FORTIFIED-certified homes, and the discount on the wind portion of your premium typically runs 20-35%. Over the life of a roof that’s real money. FORTIFIED has three tiers: Bronze (sealed roof deck — taped seams so even if shingles come off, the deck stays watertight), Silver (Bronze plus impact-rated shingles and reinforced gable ends), and Gold (Silver plus a continuous load path tying the roof to the foundation). Most retrofit roof replacements in Huntsville go for Bronze or Silver.
Our Role in a FORTIFIED Install
We install the roof to FORTIFIED specifications — that’s the part we do and the part we’re qualified for. Final certification is issued by an independent FORTIFIED Evaluator (not us — we’re honest about this) who inspects the completed install. We coordinate the evaluator visit so you don’t have to track down a separate vendor. The premium-discount paperwork goes through your insurance carrier and we’ll show you what to send them, but the carrier is the one who applies the discount. The whole process — install, evaluation, certification — typically adds a few days and a few hundred dollars to a standard replacement, and the insurance savings usually pay it back in 2-4 years.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the insurance discount real?
Yes — Alabama law mandates carriers offer a discount on FORTIFIED-certified homes. The exact amount varies by carrier but typically runs 20-35% of the wind premium portion of your policy.
Does FORTIFIED add a lot to the cost?
Bronze adds a few hundred dollars to a standard replacement. Silver adds more because of the impact-rated shingles. Gold is usually only practical with a structural retrofit. Most homeowners’ Bronze investment pays back in 2-4 years through insurance savings.
Who actually issues the certificate?
An independent FORTIFIED Evaluator licensed by IBHS — not us. We’re an installer; they’re the certifier. We coordinate the evaluator visit so it happens promptly after we finish.
How do I get the insurance discount applied?
Once you receive the FORTIFIED certificate, send it to your homeowners-insurance carrier with a request to apply the FORTIFIED discount. We provide a documentation packet to make this easy.
Can you retrofit an existing roof to FORTIFIED, or only new replacements?
Bronze and Silver are retrofittable during a normal replacement — the deck-sealing and Class-4 shingles get installed as part of the new roof. Gold typically requires structural work and is usually a new-construction-or-major-reno decision.
